Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month

Hello Hamama Friends!

Today is the start of Native American Heritage Month! This is the month to learn about and celebrate the rich history of the Native American Heritage. For some context, here is a video explaining the century-long process of how Native American Heritage Month was founded:

As you learned from the video, the celebration and acknowledgment of this month has been a century in the making.

A huge part of Native American culture is their rich art history. The artwork and colors are so breathtakingly beautiful!. From paintings to vases to clothing, artwork is rooted in their culture. Please check out the following video to learn about one of the first exhibitions created by Native Women:

Native Americans have been the caretakers of this land and they are dedicated to protecting it always. They are also the leaders in the climate change movement. Recently Hamama, spotlighted the People vs Fossil Fuels protest. The Indigenous people came together to demand that the Biden Administration does everything that was promised and more to ensure that this land is not only here for us but for multiple generations to come.

The wonderful thing about social media is that it provides us with an opportunity to be more aware of Native American organizations. Here are just a few organizations that are definitely worth looking into:

Seeding Sovereignty

“Seeding Sovereignty, an Indigenous-led collective, works to radicalize and disrupt colonized spaces through land, body, and food sovereignty work, community building, and cultural preservation. By investing in Indigenous folks and communities of the global majority, we cross the threshold of liberation together.”

Indigenous Rising Media

“Indigenous Peoples are Rising Up in Solidarity to defend our Rights as Indigenous Peoples; to protect the Sacredness of, the Territorial Integrity of, and Rights of (Grandmother) Mother Earth; and the Rights of Future Generations. We are building solidarity from the Global South to the North to fulfill our sacred duties, listening to the teachings of our elders and the voices of our youth and women, to act wisely to carry out our responsibilities to enhance the health and respect the sacredness of Mother Earth, and to demand climate justice now. Indigenous Peoples will not stand idle as we tell the world the Earth is the source of life to be protected, not merely a resource to be exploited.”

“Native Women's Wilderness was created to bring Native women together to share our stories, support each other, and learn from one another as we endeavor to explore and celebrate the wilderness and our native lands”
